French markets are a feast for all the senses, from the stunning displays of meat, fish, fruit and vegetable to the delicious smells of fresh baked bread, roasting chickens and fresh flowers. Even ripe cheese such as camembert and goats cheese add to the heady fragrant atmosphere! Here are photos from some of my favourite French markets in Sanary sur Mer, Bandol, Antibes and Nice in the south of France; Bergerac in the south west and Montreuil Sur Mer and Etaples in the north.

Celebrating the culture, language and local traditions, Lu Festin de Nissa (Nice Folklore Festival) takes place at the Jardins de Cimiez in May. These gardens also boast Roman ruins and the Museum of Matisse. The women in the dance troupe wear traditional dress in designs typical of Provence – the inspiration for some of our tablecloths!
