Provence tablecloths are the stars of the Great British Sewing Bee 2020

Garments made from Provence tablecloths

Colourful tablecloths from Provence took centre stage in World Sewing Week, episode 8 of BBC TV’s Great British Sewing Bee 2020.

In this quarter-final episode, as part of the transformation challenge the contestants had to make a brand new outfit out of Provencal table cloths. Making skilled use of the tablecloths’ paisley patterns and vibrant provencal motifs, the talented sewers created a girl’s dress, a kimono, a halter neck top and skirt, a pair of ruffled trousers and a Japanese inspired jacket. The winner of this challenge was Clare Bradley with her little girl’s dress in striking blue and yellow with a lemons pattern. Clare went on to be crowned the overall winner of this year’s competion.

Fun at the France Show 2019

French tablcloths at the France Show 2019

It was lovely to meet so many of my regular customers  at the 2019 France Show at Olympia in January. Despite pre-Brexit jitters, keen Francophiles enjoyed the experience of ‘visiting France in a day’ at the show, it certainly beat queuing at the Channel Tunnel!

France Show 2017

It was a pleasure to meet so many customers at the France Show at Olympia in January. My good friends Janet, Sue and Alison were on hand to help me out so I was able to have a good look around the show and the lovely French property stands.

Visiting French Tablecloth Heaven

Like a kid in a sweetshop, I just wanted to buy all the designs when I visited my tablecloth supplier in Provence! The firm dates from the 1930’s and is still run by the same family.

French market love

French markets are a feast for all the senses, from the stunning displays of meat, fish, fruit and vegetable to the delicious smells of fresh baked bread, roasting chickens and  fresh flowers.  Even ripe cheese such as camembert  and goats cheese add to the heady fragrant atmosphere! Here are photos from some of my favourite French markets in Sanary sur Mer, Bandol, Antibes and Nice in the south of France; Bergerac in the south west and Montreuil Sur Mer and Etaples in the north.

Nice Festival of Folklore

Celebrating the culture, language and local traditions, Lu Festin de Nissa (Nice Folklore Festival) takes place at the Jardins de Cimiez in May. These gardens also boast Roman ruins and the Museum of Matisse. The women in the dance troupe wear traditional dress in designs typical of Provence – the inspiration for some of our tablecloths!
